Navotas residents told evacuate due to ammonia leak from ice plant

MANILA, Philippines — Some residents in Navotas City had been urged to go away their houses and search momentary shelter at evacuation facilities after an ice plant alongside North Bay Boulevard sprang a leak, Mayor Toby Tiangco stated.

The ammonia vapors launched from the plant are poisonous to people.

“Please avoid North Blvd [Boulevard] and R-10, may ammonia leak from T.P. Marcelo Ice Plant and Cold Storage.  Nanduon na po BFP [Bureau of Fire Protection] and mga ambulance natin.  sa mga residente pls evacuate,” stated Tiangco in a tweet.

(BFP and ambulance are on website. Residents, please evacuate.)

In a separate interview with dzBB, Tiangco stated, for now, they might prioritize the evacuation whereas authorities are investigating what precipitated the leak.

“Mapaalis muna ang residente and then mahinto yung leak. As soon as maalis ang residente, ichecheck ang ice plant kung nasara ang leak,” he stated.

(We want residents to go away after which we cease the leak. Once they flee, authorities will test if the leak has stopped.)

He stated the residents can be despatched to designated evacuation facilities whereas the BFP addresses the leak.

No one was damage within the incident, Tiangco added.

As of posting, BFP stated the chemical leak in Navotas has not but been stopped.
