Dragon dancers scale up ambitions in Vietnam


CAN THO, Vietnam: By day, Le Yen Quyen works as a pharmacist at her native well being clinic in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta. At evening, she dances below the top of a lion on perilously excessive steel poles, practising her strikes forward of Lunar New Year festivities.

Quyen, 27, was one of many first ladies to affix the Tu Anh Duong lion and dragon dance troupe, the place performers mimic the actions of the creatures to convey good luck and dispel evil spirits.

“To get good at lion dancing you have to be patient … take risks,” Quyen, whose husband can be a dancer in the troupe, instructed AFP.

“It was very difficult at the beginning. I injured my hands and feet.”

Central to the routine are 21 steel plinths, some standing at greater than 2m, which dancers should soar between to symbolise the difficult levels in life that have to be overcome.

Towering over all of them is a 7m pole – the last word spot to showcase the advanced twists and turns of the lion dance.

TRAILBLAZING

As a taekwondo black belt, Quyen already had the agility and energy to excel on the dance, which has been carried out for hundreds of years – largely by males – in Vietnam and different components of Asia.

But to affix, she needed to overcome resistance from the area people, who stated it was too difficult for a girl.

It was her expertise that finally satisfied them, stated Quyen, who has received dozens of gold medals at native and nationwide lion and dragon dance competitions.

“I am proud to be the person who has inspired other girls,” she stated, explaining that there are actually 20 ladies in the troupe.

One of these is Luu Thi Kim Thuong, 17, who signed up with 4 of her buddies, regardless of a concern of heights.

“When I trained at the beginning, I was scared … and I couldn’t climb to the very top. But gradually, I climbed higher and higher day by day,” Thuong stated.

“It took me three months to climb the high poles.”

Training for 2 to 3 hours after faculty every day, she stated she has constructed nice chemistry along with her fellow dancers.

That is essential for such a demanding sport, she added.

“We have to communicate, to understand each other. If something is wrong, one of us has to say it out loud so we can fix it together.”
